Get a career as an EMT!

April 10, 2010 by admin_emtcoursenet Leave a Comment

There are lots of jobs and careers that beckon to people every day and one of the most interesting fields involves EMT paramedic training. While some people might think that all EMT classifications are basically the same, nothing could be further from the truth.

A paramedic has many more responsibilities and more extensive training than a basic level EMT and as a result the job opportunities are more exciting and challenging. With EMT paramedic training you can prepare yourself for a job with a helicopter medical flight team or you can work with a fire department. You might even discover that there are more job openings at hospitals that welcome a person with the advanced training and skills of an EMT paramedic.Nurses

EMT paramedic training is an intense program that requires people to have strong leadership, math, science, and problem solving skills.  If these areas have always been your strengths, than you might be a prime candidate to complete an EMT paramedic training program.  The jobs are highly rewarding and there are many chances for personal and professional advancement. The fact that the demand for these types of workers remains high is another major attraction for people who are considering stepping into this field.

However, if you have never done any work as a first responder to emergencies, such as with the fire department or in an emergency room, then you will probably want to put in some time getting some real hands on experience before taking the next step needed to  get your paramedic certification. This will help you find out what the job really involves and there is no better way to discover this than by riding aboard an ambulance and responding to a variety of 911 calls.

Working on an ambulance gives you experiences that you could not duplicate by any EMT college classroom assignment. You will learn how challenging emergency health care actually is and you will also be called upon to deliver your best in a variety of situations and settings.

Your emotions will run the gamut from humor to depression and sadness as you make the ambulance runs with more experienced EMTs. Learning to control your own responses and deliver the best medical treatment comes with this type of experience, and it is not something that can be taught in any classroom setting offering EMT paramedic training.

Many people who choose EMT paramedic training have already had some type of experience with emergency services. A number of these individuals have already gained a wealth of experience through several years aboard an ambulance. This gives them an advantage when it comes to class work, practical tests and other assignments. It is indeed a case where “Been there; Done that” is extremely beneficial.

As soon as you meet the qualifications for EMT paramedic training you can start the associate’s degree program that will give you the training you need. Additional real world experience will still make the transition easier, especially since the EMT paramedic is the one in charge of the ambulance team.

The Basics in Getting EMT Training

April 7, 2010 by admin_emtcoursenet Leave a Comment

Ambulance waitingThe growing number of online EMT schools has managed to popularize the idea of attending EMT college. Although these jobs are some of the most needed in the country, there are a lot of misconceptions about what EMT life is all about. A majority of individuals don’t even realize that these types of jobs can be a launching pad for advancement in the health care industry.

Let’s start with the basics about EMT schools and the courses that are involved. You can find some good EMT curriculums in your local community. Many of these courses are offered at a community college, but online EMT college is narrowing the gap and rapidly gaining on the more traditional brick and mortar educational settings.

You will need to have a GED or HS diploma in order to enroll in any EMT course but many times you will find that there are counselors who can show you how to complete your GED quickly so that you can complete your EMT enrollment process. You do need to understand basic math principles but there are courses available that can help you strengthen your knowledge and skills prior to working on your first courses.

If you are concerned about the scheduling of classes and assignments then perhaps the online EMT schools should be the route you choose. These offer the most flexibility regarding schedules and they can even be set up so that they do not interfere with your present employment. It might take you a little more time to complete the course work, but it will be a lot less stressful and you will not have to worry about quitting your job in order to take the EMT courses that are required.

Don’t worry if you do not have any prior experience because most students who are enrolling in online EMT schools have little (if any) previous training in first aid or CPR.  The instructors understand that each student comes from a different situation and they will work with you to make sure that you are able to comprehend the material that is being provided. Online EMT schools do not press you to complete the program in a certain amount of time which gives you the opportunity to work at your own speed and concentrate on learning and retaining the concepts and principles about emergency medical care.nurse

You will learn the basics of first aid in the field and successfully passing a basic CPR course is also included in any program offered by EMT schools in all states. Practical class work is another part of an EMT curriculum. Unlike tests that involve just rote memorization of material in books, practical work gives you the opportunity to show that you have learned the techniques and can demonstrate them to instructors on demand.

Most students enjoy the chance to practice their skills and the critiques are helpful because they will show you what you need to work on as well as let you know which techniques you have successfully mastered. Hands on experience under the supervision of qualified teachers is invaluable because it gives you a chance to perfect your first aid and CPR techniques before you are required to use them in real life.

No matter which of the many EMT schools you choose practical work is a necessary part of your class program. At EMT college individuals are given a curriculum that is well balanced and thorough in scope. This ensures that the students are prepared for the real world and the rigors of a job as a fully certified EMT.

Going through an EMT online training program can be a valuable asset to you as you position yourself to start a brand new future. You do want to check into each EMT online training program that you are considering so that you can make sure that the school is accredited for the training that you need.

EMT online training programs will often use a combination of video clips and video taped lectures that you can watch on your own time to gain the information that you need.  Some classes will even have a live, online lecture so that students from around the country can tune in and listen during a special class time prescribed by the instructor.

In other cases, the instructors that teach certain EMT courses may give students an online chat session, so that they can ask any questions that they might have during a particular time of day on certain days.  However, not all instructors will do this, and most will only give you an email address to use in asking questions. But either way you know that you will have the opportunity to interact with the teachers who are providing the assignments at any of the EMT schools online.

When you utilize the EMT online training, you will learn about serving behind the scenes in emergency situations.  Since you never know what the situation will be in the field, you have to be trained in a wide variety of different situations in order to ensure that you can deal with whatever you are thrown.  You will have to learn to treat wounds and fractures that the patient might have.  You will have to learn ways to stop bleeding and also how to deal with blood and other bodily fluids in a safe manner.

You will also have to learn how to use the various types of equipment needed to transport and help patients in these emergency situations.  In order to learn this part of the training, you will usually have to sign up for some ground courses in addition to the EMT online training courses that you take.

These additional courses will teach you how to use the oxygen systems on ambulances, how to use backboards to immobilize patients, and how to use the stretchers that are used to transport the patients.

You will also have to learn how to document the information that you gain from the patient and the family members or friends at the scene as well as the procedures that you do with the patient on the way to the hospital.  You will have to learn how to use the radios that are in the ambulances so that you can talk with the hospital staff and any other emergency personnel who may happen to be present at the scene.  As you can see, although much of the medical terminology and other health care can be learned from the EMT online training, you will also have to learn through hands on experience in campus courses.

Accelerated EMT Training Boot Camps

March 19, 2010 by admin_emtcoursenet Leave a Comment

It seems as though everything is being placed on the fast track and this includes many educational programs as well. Today people can sign up for an EMT boot camp where they will receive accelerated EMT training in as little as 2 weeks or as long as one semester. While this fast track certification program may not be right for everyone it could certainly be the answer to your own career goals.

If you choose the longer route instead of an intense EMT boot camp you can expect to devote about 16 hours a week to your class time and training. With the accelerated EMT training you will receive in an EMT boot camp you will be required to commit 10-12 hours a day to the program for a total of 14 days.

Some people decide to try the accelerated EMT training camp during the summer months when they have more available time. You might even be able to schedule your courses during the time you would normally be planning your annual vacation.

Students are still going to receive the same type of instruction and they will be covering the same material that is presented in the regular emergency medical technician programs, but at an EMT boot camp there is very little downtime. The intensity of these accelerated programs can be daunting but if you are willing to exert the effort you will discover that it is certainly within your ability to complete the course.

There have been crash courses for a number of years and now they are available in almost any subject. This type of fast paced training is ideal for many students because it keeps their minds engaged throughout the entire program. When you are going to class or practicing your skills for up to 12 hours at a time you are certainly not going to be bored.

You will have to be the one to decide if EMT boot camp is the right path to choose. If you do not like a fast paced class then this will most likely not be the best match. A longer program can provide you with the less stressful and less hectic pace. If you have the determination required to fully commit to accelerated EMT training then this type of environment could be a great choice.

Ambulance waitingThe classes required to earn your EMT certification are not extremely difficult for most students to complete. Many former students state that their biggest hurdle was getting comfortable with all of the new terminology that they had to learn. There is also the need to be comfortable in front of others because you will be called upon to perform demonstrations of your newly acquired skills.

If you decide to choose an online EMT program you will have a flexible schedule and the freedom to study at a pace that is right for you. This will allow you the time to concentrate on material that may be a little tougher to understand and if you are having an easy time with your studies you can pick up the speed and move through your class assignments at a little faster pace.

EMT boot camp will be the perfect educational route for many students but it is not the only avenue available. You should do a little research and talk with your family before you make a decision about the program that will work best for you.

You are going to learn how to isolate broken bones, and how to use a backboard and neck brace for patients who might have a spinal or neck injury.  At an EMT college there are courses and programs that will even teach you how to safely move patients from a stretcher to a bed so that you do not injure yourself or the patient when doing so.

Your emergency medical training will teach you how to multitask with ease and you will be ready to roll on an ambulance call once you have mastered the coursework and passed all of the tests. If you are ready to challenge yourself to do your best and be the best then there is an EMT program online that is ready for you.

Emergency Medical Training/EMT college

Emergency Medical Training/EMT college

Do you want to go back to school, but are not sure about what courses you want to take? Then why not consider signing up for emergency medical training and launch a career as an EMT?

The health industry is continuing to boom even in the face of economic decline in many other industries.  For this reason EMT College is becoming a popular choice for a large number of individuals.

Emergency work is a stable and growing field for people to consider especially if they have been laid off from a job and want to expand their opportunities. Becoming an EMT is also a great choice for people who are just beginning to look for a job that offers them growth, good pay and the chance to quickly advance to higher paying positions.

RescueThere are administrative jobs available in the medical billing field, giving desk work to people who have those strengths.  The schooling required for such positions is usually not too time intensive, at least to start out, allowing people to rapidly move into the field and then get additional training later as they wish to do so.

There are also technical jobs in the health industry, such as radiology.  Radiology takes more training than basic administrative positions, but it is still not as intensive as nursing or especially becoming a medical doctor.  In addition, people have the choice of working in general practice, state hospitals, or private hospitals.  They can work at a private practice, and can work with children or the elderly if they so desire.

When searching for a job at a hospital or nursing home that involves a ‘hands on’ type of medical position, people will find they are moved to the top of the list if they have completed basic emergency medical training.  This type of specialized training allows these individuals to be prepared to deal with highly stressful emergency situations where a calm head and specific skills are needed in order to provide proper care for seriously ill patients or those people with traumatic injuries.

At the basic level, emergency medical training will teach students how to assess patients in the field. You will learn how to do head to toe assessments and prioritize treatment options in as little as a minute. This might seem impossible to someone who has never ridden on an ambulance or taken an EMT course, but speed is of the essence when an accident or illness occurs and as a first responder you are trained to act quickly and confidently.

You will learn how to check a patient’s pulse, respirations, oxygen saturation and blood pressure. As an EMT you are also going to learn how to calm and soothe the patient and how to reassure their family members at the same time.

Promising Career for Licensed EMT’s

February 27, 2010 by admin_emtcoursenet Leave a Comment

Student graduateTraining to Become an EMT?

Geting EMT training and becoming a licensed EMT is an exciting process for anyone. These steps are the perfect way for you to get started in one of the most fulfilling of all service oriented jobs as you launch an EMT career. When you sign up for Emergency medical technician training courses online it allows you to gain different levels of certification as you progress in your education and the career of your choice.

Many people assume that an emergency medical technician training course makes you a full-fledged paramedic, but that is certainly not the case. Your first EMT training courses are just the beginning of a new and challenging world. In order for you to become a paramedic, you have to complete an additional two levels of certification, plus put in a great many hours out in the field before you can become a full fledged paramedic.

Levels of Training
The first level of emergency medical technician training that you will need to go through is the basic level coursework. You will not be able to start this level unless you have your high school diploma or the equivalent to it, such as the GED. During this level of emergency medical technician training, you will learn the basics of emergency response procedures and how to handle many of the most common issues that you will face in the field. You will study things like cardiac problems, respiratory issues, and how to deal with multiple types of trauma. These courses will prepare you to move into the medical field with the confidence and skills necessary to do the work that needs to be done.

In order to pass basic training, you have to take a written test at the end of the course work and training. You will also have to do a practical exam to show that you know how to handle basic emergency issues in the field. These tests are given through the state boards or through the national organization for emergency medical technicians called NREMT.

The next level of emergency medical technician training is the intermediate level. This level takes more time to complete because you are learning more in-depth material that pertains to the field. This level of study usually takes up to three hundred course hours in order to prepare you for working in the field. You will learn more advanced skills such as how to administer certain medications and how to use devices such as defibrillator machines. You will usually learn to administer IV fluids as well during this level, although the requirements can vary depending on the state.

The level of paramedic is the final level of emergency medical technician training that is involved in an EMT career. This training is usually done through a junior college or at a four year school as a part of an associate of science degree. The training for paramedic requires that anatomy and physiology classes be taken as well as other higher level science courses in order to fully train the EMT on the workings of the human body. The paramedic will also learn more of the medical terminology in the pursuit of the degree so that they can clearly express what they are seeing in various emergency situations to the nurses and doctors at the hospitals when they arrive.

Pursuing a Career as an EMT

February 25, 2010 by admin_emtcoursenet Leave a Comment

ParamedicIf you enjoy working with a wide variety of people, being challenged by new, surprising situations, and helping others, you will probably enjoy being an emergency medical technician and fashioning an EMT career. EMT courses that are taught online and in community colleges train you to know what to do when faced by a wide variety of emergency situations. Not only will you get the book learning that you need, but you will also learn emergency medical training skills through hands-on practice.
Once you have completed the EMT courses, then you will need to take your state’s certification test. There is a written part of the test as well as a practical portion that will thoroughly test your emergency medical training. Each one of these has to be passed in order to be certified as an EMT and this is only the beginning as you journey toward a well paying EMT career.

Options in the Career

The normal career path that an EMT career involves will take dedication, time and effort. Individuals must complete the educational requirements, pass their training and certification courses and then they are allowed to work in an ambulance. There are different types of ambulances that you will encounter in a normal EMT career. The higher level ambulance is designated as an ACLS unit and it can respond to the 911 calls and is equipped to handle a wide variety of medical emergencies.

Another type is a less demanding unit and it handles primarily cases involving only medical transport ,such as moving a nursing home patient from the home to the hospital or vice versa. Usually, the partners will switch positions in the 911 ambulances, allowing one to drive during the first call while the other is in the back and on the next call, they switch. You can enjoy a variety of different duties and assignments and practice your emergency medical training skills as you progress in your EMT career.

There are other positions that EMT workers can also fill after taking the EMT courses. They may work in an emergency room, helping as an assistant when people come in for help. They usually do not handle as much of the emergency work since the nurses and doctors handle that. Instead, they assist the doctors and nurses in what they do. This is a good position for those who like the action but do not like to deal as directly in the field with the patients with traumatic injuries. No one EMT career has to be exactly like another and to some degree you can tailor yours to suit your needs.

Finally you can even find an EMT career that is in conjunction with the fire department, allowing you to be there on the scene when the fire department arrives and be part of the team that is helping. Most people who want this type of EMT career will need to advance their education and become a certified paramedic.

The emergency medical training that EMT technicians must endure is rigorous and physically demanding. It involves many instances where you have to bend down, lift, push, kneel, and more each day, multiple times per day. In addition, they have to work in extreme weather, dealing with hot and cold weather as well as snow and rain. They will usually work about forty to sixty hours per week in all of these conditions if they are ambulance workers. Hospital workers do not have to deal with these weather conditions, but the long hours are still common.

The good thing about an EMT career in the health care system is that the need for these workers is consistent and even growing. There are also opportunities for advancement in the career through additional emergency medical training courses and you may possibly become a paramedic, nurse or even a doctor further down the road. You can be guaranteed of one thing, an EMT career provides any individual with an exciting, rewarding, and an every changing job.

How can I become a Certified EMT?

February 11, 2010 by admin_emtcoursenet Leave a Comment

An emergency medical technician (EMT) is often the first to respond in an emergency situation.  Their role in emergency medical response is a critical one and therefore they are always in high demand.  For a person willing and able to obtain the right training and EMT certification, a career as an emergency medical technician can be a rewarding and fulfilling one.

Before enrolling in EMT classes, a person should first assess his or her abilities and disposition.  A successful emergency medical technician will be expected to manage very high-stress situations on a regular basis.  He or she will also need to be able to make crucial decisions at the spur of the moment, and work every shift at a high level of intensity.  For some, a work environment like this is thrilling and energizing, while for others it might prove to be a little too intense.  Passing an EMT course will not prove to be a fruitful endeavor if the candidate does not have the appropriate disposition to handle a work environment of that sort.

If a person determines that a career as an emergency medical technician will fit their aptitudes and lifestyle, it is time to research EMT certification requirements for their state.  Each state has its own specific guidelines as to how many classroom training hours an EMT course is required to provide.  While enrolled in EMT classes, students will also be required to complete a certain number of hands-on hours in the field, spending time in an ambulance and in various hospital settings.  The scope and length of the EMT certification course will be dictated by the level of certification the candidate is pursuing.

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has defined four levels of EMTs, starting with the entry level EMT-B (Basic), EMT-I/85 (lower level intermediate), EMT-I/99 (higher level intermediate), and EMT-P (Paramedic).  An EMT course will mandate progressively longer and more rigorous training for the prospective emergency medical technician depending on the level of certification he or she is pursuing.  To obtain Paramedic classification, the candidate will generally be required to obtain, at minimum, an Associate’s degree to prove their competency as a medical care provider.

Once a person has identified the EMT certification requirements of his or her state and established the level of EMT that they would like to attain, it is time to enroll inEMT classes.  There are generally quite a few different types of programs to choose from, ranging from those that are entirely based on in-person training, to those that are wholly internet based.  If a person is tempted by the ease of an entirely online option, they would do well to thoroughly research the certification requirements of their particular state, as it is quite uncommon for a valid EMT certification to be issued based on all virtual training.

If someone is seeking a stable career in an exciting environment with the opportunity to truly help people, obtaining an EMT certification might be the perfect choice.  With distinct opportunities for advancement, and nationwide career availability, EMT classes which lead to a career as an Emergency Medical Technician should be strongly considered.
